The new civil right: How the LGBTQ community can knock down barriers to economic empowerment

With marriage equality a reality across the country, the next major step forward for LGBTQ civil rights is greater economic empowerment, according to several Bay Area LGBTQ business leaders.

“We’ve had some amazing wins in the last 20 years. But you still have to look at the bread-and-butter issues at the household level,” said Tom Gaynor, San Francisco office managing partner at the law firm Nixon Peabody. “Economic empowerment is the goal of every civil rights movement — having control of one’s destiny.”
