StartOut Index
What isn’t measured doesn’t get addressed. Thus, in 2019, we launched the StartOut Index to measure the economic contributions of LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, and notably what they could be with equal access to resources. To encourage allies and organizations to support our community, we are delivering the quantitative case why support not only matters but benefits society at large.
Key StartOut Index Insights:
- Only 0.5% of all funding for startups went to LGBTQ entrepreneurs, and only 7.4% went to female entrepreneurs.
- 43% of major metropolitan areas in the United States have no LGBTQ entrepreneurs identified.
- 57% of the funding toward LGBTQ-founded startups goes to the Bay Area, followed by NYC at 9%, and LAX at 6%.
Diminished Diversity in Entrepreneurial Pipelines
StartOut, in collaboration with the Eidos LGBTQ+ Health Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania, is proud to announce the release of a pivotal new report Diminished Diversity in Entrepreneurial Pipelines. This report highlights barriers faced by LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, with a special focus on underrepresented racial and gender groups within the LGBTQ+ community.
We hypothesized that certain groups appear to face greater drop-offs during more competitive stages of the founder experience. These findings highlight the importance of continuous monitoring and proactive measures to support the diverse needs of LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, ensuring their full potential is realized within the StartOut community.
